I Heart Serendipity
So last night I had a few goodbyes to get through... especially now since I will be gone for more than a year. So I set off. After coffee and conversation with Kelly (who I am bound to see sooner rather than later, since we have another mutual goodbye on Monday) I rang my trusty gentleman caller to find out where they were. In typical male fashion, plans were confused. Finally, I got annoyed, and pulled over to wait for an answer.
Broadway. So I hopped out of the car. Crossing the street, someone looked awfully familiar. Well, turns out it was his twin, but we established the connection and chatted... chatted an awful lot for two people who had never met before. Just as I was thinking to wrap it up, the sound of a skateboard pulled my eyes up, and who should come by but Drew! I went into overdrive. He and I have a habit of serendipity in our friendship.
We met... oh... more than six years ago, at a party down at Wreck Beach. He rode home with a friend of mine in the trunk of the car... ahhh, high school. We became fast friends, something about us being on the same page, which is strange in high school. Smoked pot, ate cookie dough and generally kept things platonic (except for a brief and mistaken kiss). After I dated and dumped his best friend though, Drew and I lost touch. We didn't speak outside of a few casual mass emails. The summer after first year, I was leaving a coffee shop and saw him sitting by the window. Pleased, I wandered over, and we managed to pull out one night together watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory under the influence. Then it was back to the infrequent emails. And many times this summer I had thought to call him, but he was out of town until September.
And then yesterday, fate again brought us together. I do believe that some people are meant to stay in your life, and it has been made more than clear by whatever invisible hand moves us in our day-to-day kinda wants us to stay friends. So I took his number and promised him a bowl. I am so excited, it really made my night. So my summer and more importantly my weekend, just got a whole lot better.
